OK, the title may be a bad joke but Love Live Sunshine!! Season 2 has finished. It saddens us Aqours fans to know our girls have moved on and their school has closed down. It was such a touching last episode, the feels train was high and relentless.
I have nothing but positive things to say about season 2, in fact I think it’s the best season in the entire Love Live franchise. It far surpassed season 1 of LLS which I felt had an awkward start but good finish. Seeing these girls grow closer and closer together over the course of the season was really touching. Their friendship and determination to save their school from closing down is strong.
I was so happy to see that second season was able to stop mimicking U’s and branch out into their own stories finally. That’s what really bothered me about the first season, it felt like they were trying too hard to be like Love Live season 1 when they should just do something new. Of course it’s still the same thing in a way, they did win Love Live, but it felt like they really earned it.
The episodes focusing on Ruby and Leah were highly enjoyable, it was nice to see Ruby get more screen time and development. Most of all, I really liked how they added to Love Live’s version of making “their rivals” more personal and friendly. In Love Live’s season 2, U’s got a little friendly with Arise near the end, as if they’re now friends but still rivals kinda thing. Love Live Sunshine!! season 2 kinda did the same but they took it to a whole new level. I actually ended up liking Saint Snow at the end of the arc, Leah and Sarah are such a cute pair of sisters, not as cute as Ruby and Dia though!
I know it’s not good to compare U’s and Aqours, I really dislike when people do that. While I like both of them in their own ways, I only wanted to compare the content of the seasons and not the actual girls themselves.
I feel somewhat relieved that I won’t have to go through what others may have to soon. The inevitable realization that “your favorite idol group is no more”. Aqours is definitely my favorite at the moment, but I feel more prepared for the official disbandment (the VA’s contract ending and the last live). It was a sad day knowing that U’s was going to be gone forever.
I remember hating on Aqours when the first season started, my heart was with U’s and I never imagined they would disband so soon. Having to deal with Sunshine was something I didn’t want to accept, I didn’t want to like them because they weren’t U’s. All I saw was a bunch of girls trying to copy U’s, it felt like such a rip-off.
After some time however, I gave them a second chance and I started to like them later on. The feelings of resentment were finally gone and I was able to like Aqours. I’m glad to have given that second chance to them, I definitely don’t regret it.
Finally, thank you Aqours for the amazing second season and all the lovely songs! I would very much love to be wrong about Aqours disbanding after the movie and doing their last live like U’s. Although, I won’t keep my hopes up.
I’ll leave this short review of my own personal highlights of the season:
- Comedy more on point compared to season 1
- Yohane actually being funny
- Lots of dorky Riko moments!!!
- Development on Ruby
- Better music
- 3DCG vastly improved, no more weird fps
- Ended relatively realistically and satisfying
Oh and finally, most importantly, Riko now has a nickname “Lily”.
Score: strong 9/10
See you again Aqours when the movie comes out!
